Picture shows remarkable recovery of South Croydon footballer beaten into coma

Friday, August 22, 2008, 07:00

Sitting up in bed, it is a photograph of footballer Rob Hughes his family and friends feared they would never see.

The 27-year-old, from South Croydon, was beaten into a coma by a group of thugs while on holiday in Greece in June.

But he is making a remarkable recovery and is awaiting a fourth operation on his skull.

The former Croydon Athletic player was outside a nightclub when he was jumped on by a group of yobs who kicked him to the ground, stamped on his head and bottled him.

He is pictured here in a hospital bed in the resort of Malia, Crete.

Rob's mum Margaret, 54, says he chose this picture especially for readers of the Advertiser so they could thank everybody for their support.

He is becoming used to media attention as his moving story has already featured on GMTV and London Tonight.

Margaret said: "He's like a celebrity in the hospital. When they see him they all point - not in a horrible way.

"They all say 'that's the one they talk about'. I'm just glad my son is alive."

A shocking photograph was released of Rob in a coma shortly after the assault.

Medics say he actually "died" twice and he had to have two lifesaving operations to remove chunks of his skull.

Five men arrested over the attack have been allowed to travel back to their homes in Surrey and Sussex.

A loophole in the country's law meant because the attack had not been officially reported within 48 hours , the men could be freed.

Margaret has stayed out in Greece with Rob's girlfriend of 11 years Charlotte Kent, 25.

The family say a huge financial strain has been put on them having to stay abroad.

They say, though, they will deal with money issues when they get home to England.

Margaret added: "When his (fourth) operation has been done then hopefully, if all is well, they will consider after 14 days airlifting him back to England."

Rob played for Croydon Athletic and Sutton United last season and was about to sign for Bromley FC.

Meanwhile, Bromley FC have started a fundraiser for Rob on their official website.
