Le Cassoulet, in Selsdon Road, South Croydon, is one of five restaurants up for Time Out's Best Local Restaurant accolade.
Proud owner Malcolm John, 43, from South Croydon, is "thrilled" with the recognition.
He said: "A vote for Le Cassoulet is a vote for Croydon.
"This competition is a real boost for me, my staff and for Croydon.
"I've lived in Croydon for 17 years and I spotted a niche in the market for a casual, quality French bistro in the area.
"I brought the 16th Century cassoulet (a meat and veg stew) to life and served it in my own way for Croydon, and it's been a huge success.
"We're going from strength to strength and this is only the beginning."
Despite managing two restaurants – the other is Le Vacherin, in Chiswick – Malcolm says he is very "hands on" at the restaurant.
"I've been a chef for 26 years and I'm always dipping in and out of my kitchens," he said.
The French eatery, which opened eight months ago, has won praise for dishes such as steak tartare, a scallops, bacon and black pudding salad and the cassoulet of duck and pork.
Head chef Philippe Amponsah said he was delighted for his four helpers and praised his Croydon clientele for "liking the meat dishes, and not the salads, which they go for in the Chiswick restaurant".
The 29-year-old said: "I think we've done so well because of our quality and our passion."
