What's On

"OK" I said and looked up to the nav bar searching for a link that's suggests where two right thinking Croydonites might spend what's left of their disposable income by way of entertainment. I saw a link that said "Entertainment" (its on the top there four from left) and being an idiot, I pressed it.
The first headline read "BBC To Release Dad's Army Documents". Funny I thought, I don't recall Walmington On Sea being anywhere near Croydon. The next headline was "Carla Makes 'most stylish list'". Even funnier, I thought, I've never seen France's first lady shopping in Primark… not the one in North End anyway.
I kept on reading and it wasn't until I realised that Duffy wasn't all that fussed about illegal downloads that this had sod all to do with Croydon. At that point Mrs D came to my rescue and patiently explained, using Powerpoint presentations, drawings and sock puppets, that Entertainment News did not mean what's on, as in what's on at the Fairfield Halls or the Cinema. What's On guides did that.
As I pondered my ignorance, it did cross my mind that I never watch, read or listen to Entertainment News, not deliberately anyway. The world of celebrity passes me by. In a world of RSS feeds, Google readers and Twitter streams I can pretty much filter out any of the crap I don't want to know about and concentrate on the crap that I do.
So while Pete Doherty's heartache over his break-up with Kate Moss (or should that be Croydon's very own Kate Moss?) may have passed me by, I did find out that Victor Moses has signed a new contract. The latter being approximately five million times more interest to me than the latter and no I'm not exaggerating.
The up side to this is that I never get to read about stuff like the assortment of maladjusted exhibisionats on Big Brother or the media's tedious obsession with Amy Winehouse's drug habits. The downside is I can never remember if a film I want to see is still on at the cinema until its gone. Goodbye Incredible Hulk, farewell Dark bloody Knight.
No doubt there are some lessons to be learned here about how news is disseminated in the modern world and the challenges it presents to news services. Or about the value of having a clearly labelled What's On button on local news websites. The good thing though is that these lessons can be very easily filtered out.
