An hour-long police helicopter chase through Norbury and Thornton Heath was sparked after a woman was assaulted by a man carrying a Samurai sword.

Patrol officers, air officers and police dogs were used in the pursuit, which resulted in a 20-year-old man being arrested.

The incident began at around 7pm on Wednesday when PCSOs on a routine patrol witnessed the woman being assaulted by the knifeman in Green Lane, Thornton Heath.

The woman suffered a broken nose in the incident.

However, when approached by the PCSOs the attacker fled the scene.

The police helicopter was scrambled at 7.35pm.

The pursuit eventually ended at 8.20pm in Norbury Avenue, Norbury.

A police spokeswoman said: "PCSOs from the Upper Norwood Safer Neighbourhood Team were on a bus patrol when they witnessed a woman being assaulted by a man in Green Lane, causing her to fall to the ground sustaining a broken nose.

"They quickly got off the bus and approached the male who was armed with a knife.

"As they approached, the man decamped into back gardens.

"The PCSOs called up for other units for assistance, who contained the area.

"A dog van and the Air Support Unit were mobilised to assist with the search.

"A man was located and a 12-inch Samurai sword was retrieved.

"A 20-year-old man was arrested for ABH, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of cannabis. Enquiries are continuing."
